You never know where people are astral projecting these days. And I freely admit that I can't see all there is to see, my brain and eyes are limited. For all I know there are beings on this earth that live around us, but we can't see them because we aren't mantis shrimp or whatever. I'm just saying there could be people, or beings, that are watching you right now and you would never know. This isn't a new thought for me. It freaked me out at first, but then I just decided to live my life like I'm a 24/7 zoo exhibit. I try to be as entertaining as possible, especially when I'm alone. And I'm always polite. I excuse myself when I burp, or fart, and I shout, 'Fore!' right before I come.
Like all good snacks, I (I am not a snack) assumed Madeira cake would be named after a place; like lamingtons and the Earl of Sandwich. Obviously I know a little about Madeira cake; like that it’s tasty and that it should be consumed by the block dipped in a stein of full fat non pasteurised milk.
Wikipedia leads me to believe that this particular snack was introduced into print by Eliza Acton in her 1845 book, ‘Modern Cookery For Private Families’. The Madeira cake’s name is “sometimes mistakenly thought to originate from the Madeira Islands however, that is not the case as it was instead named after Madeira wine, a Portuguese wine from the islands, which was popular in England at the time and was often served with the cake”. What an excellent sentence. To add to the confusion; “Madeirans produce their own traditional Madeira cake - bolo de mel, a dark, spicy, honey cake - which is very different from its English counterpart.” Thank you Wikipedia. I’d research further but now my tummy is very full and I’m feeling a little sleepy. |
